About the farm

In the fall of 2016, we moved our Long Acre farm from Northern Virginia to the beautiful, peaceful Shenandoah Valley. This is a move we'd been wanting to make for quite awhile, and when we found The Wunderlich Farm we knew the time had come. The Wunderlich Farm (also known as the Weast Farm in the book My Augusta) is listed as a century farm, meaning that it's been actively and continuously farmed for at least 100 years.

The history of the land and of the home situated on it is remarkable. The home was built around 1840, and the land parcel originally consisted of 267 acres. It was split off many times, before reaching the current configuration of 21 acres. According to locals, the farm was used as a hospital during the Civil War. The brick facade of the house is covered with initials carved by visitors from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, commemorating their visit. Our portion of the original Wonderlich farm, since it was on rolling hills, was mostly used for cows, hay, pigs, and various homestead-style farming, but not for large scale crops like corn or wheat. I am hopeful that as we dig our beds we might unearth some pieces of history along with the rich soil!
