About us
It all started when...
When Cody and I met in 2012, neither of us had considered a homesteading lifestyle. Cody grew up on a fruit farm in Pennsylvania, but his parents had sold the farm and he was running a concessions company that required frequent travel to large cities. And although I had family living in the Shenandoah Valley, I had moved often as a child and was intending to plant my feet in Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in policy research and development.
Once we were living together, Cody and I realized that the draw of cities was beginning to wane. Instead of day-dreaming of rubbing elbows with the well-connected in D.C., we were dreaming of leaving it all behind and opting-out of city life altogether. Most summer evenings found us sitting in the backyard, sketching out our plans for the future. More and more, these plans involved working with the land, and moving away from our home in Northern Virginia.
In July of 2014, Cody surprised me with a stay at a B&B in Staunton, Virginia. Sitting under an oak tree, looking out onto the rolling green hills and mountain backdrop of the Shenandoah Valley, we knew that we had found what was missing. What we wanted wasn't a new job, it was a new lifestyle. The idea of getting "back to the land" filled us both with joy and ideas and passion and hope. We decided that night that we wanted to call the Valley “home”.
In September of 2016, Cody and I were married; in October of 2016 we put an offer on a beautiful, historic home in Augusta County; and in November of 2016 we moved to our very own small farm.
Since then, we have researched, planted, harvested, researched and planted more. We are so grateful to get our hands dirty and experience the honesty of reaping what we sow. Every morning, I wake up and look out over our fields towards the majestic Blue Ridge, and I feel as though the mountains have called me home.
